The only surfing I know personally is digital, but street-style at masses. Catch me in my element with another new successful Graphic Design project for a legendary automotive lifestyle brand and independent clothing line. With accumulated history, back to the early days of 2017- to have acquired the trust of this American entrepreneur as far into his journey as he is- there is a certain feeling behind the opportunity.

I am back with one of my favourites in the car sceneForeverBroke Japan, alongside new product designs. CEO Matt pitched an inquiry with details that had me in my natural element, cooking creative concepts around intertwining my favourite things as a freelance photographer and graphic designer: car culture and Japanese street-style.

Matt set towards releasing a new batch of graphic box-slap sticker decals in the classic dimensions catered to car enthusiasts. Matt orchestrated the goal for 10 sticker design concepts in horizontal rectangles scaled to 8" x 2.75". The theme and ideas were in my hands, but Matt was aware of my street-style capabilities through previous commissioned graphic design projects for his streetwear brand.

The goal was to design a few miscellaneous concepts that demonstrated his brand to the T, maintaining a fluid Brand Identity while incorporating within, consistent with platforms correlating to E-Commerce, social media, and the personalized packaging for his orders. Given the sense of Identity, this was urgent to me- but CEO Matt was way too calm about it all, leaving the ideas in my hands.

What is a Slap Sticker?

The Slap Sticker is also known as Sticker Art, in which these concepts display a vast range of inner brand creativity, generating unique and eye-appealing displays. When these stickers form together, they create what is known as sticker bombing, sticker slapping, slap-tagging, and sticker tagging- considered a form of street art that displays propaganda or a thinkable message, saying, or quote. These stickers may promote illicit propaganda or point of view— also known as vandalism or subcategory Graffiti when implemented in places aside from personal custom car projects. In this case, the sole purpose of ForeverBroke and the creation of these concepts and stickers is for custom car enthusiasts to display on their vehicles.

While assisting Strict Standards Streetwear with a similar project and result- my ideas spread thin, and these two brands began to cross paths with creativity. Conducting inspirational research in the automotive niche, I do not doubt that many great brands are generating aesthetic designs. However, the lack of SEO and Marketing behind these brands in the automotive space made it hard to source and draw inspiration from them.

As an avid car photographer, enthusiast, and seeker of everything street style— this project was right in my nature, but I felt slightly limited in terms of the horizon. After seeking external inspiration- after a lack through the brainstorming process, the ideas suddenly poured and articulated accordingly.

While it is safe to claim that the third collaborative graphic design project, and through the consistent item releases behind ForeverBroke Japan- the concepts were a success! In all ways— I am thankful to have continuous opportunities to merge my creative talents. It is becoming more frequent through brands like these— that my concepts are becoming scalable on more than just digitally arranged displays or simple products like stickers.

While working alongside CEO Matt and his focus on his clothing line and automotive lifestyle accessories- it has been years of interconnected creativity and commercial prospering from Honolulu, Hawaii, to London, Ontario. For fellow hypebeasts, street-style endeavours, or those backed by the core of graphic design, CEO Matt and I have articulated numerous works over the years together while highlighting our successful projects- you can catch further Insights on the creative process and a more detailed briefing about the projects at hand.
