This past weekend, I found myself drawn into the tightly knit circle of car enthusiasts at Orangeville Volkswagen — a dealership in a small countryside town just a short cruise from home, yet full of personality and pride in the badge it celebrates. Despite its modest scale, the event held a presence much grander than its size, powered by a genuine passion for Volkswagen culture and community, where I had to pop out for car photography compositions with my Sony A300 camera- for the cause, for the culture!
Enduring the drive in the passenger seat of Behn, who rolled deep in his modified 2000 Volkswagen Jetta MK4 VR6 — a car that speaks for itself in both tone and temperament. Given his enthusiasm for such a vehicle base- he was excited to see the gathering among other MK4 setups and generally hyped for a dedicated car show to his favourite manufacturer. Riding with us was our cousin Allan Heath, steadily hooning about with his beaten Honda CR-V. The journey there and back was its reward: open country roads, fresh summer air pouring through the windows, and a sense of shared anticipation only fellow car enthusiasts would understand.
The turnout may have been small, but it felt personal — curated, even. Slammed Volkswagens of every generation stretched across the lot, sitting low on clean dealership pavement. There was something family-friendly about the whole thing — dogs out on leashes, kids weaving between bumpers, a Bulldog riding shotgun in a miniature Volkswagen Beetle built for children. That image alone could sum up the vibe- playful and passionate, where automotive photography experiences opened up some pet photography!
The Orangeville Volkswagen staff dialled in — offering warm greetings, treating everyone like regulars, and showing love for the car culture they help support. Even on a Sunday, they seemed genuinely happy to be there, making everyone feel at home. Throwing down some raffles- I happened to take home my very own black vintage logo tee! The smell of summer mixed with petrol and barbecue — the kind of sensory cocktail that tells you, without a doubt, you are in the right place as a car enthusiast.
Behn spent some of the day laying frame across the lot, joined by a widebody MK5 Golf and a few other low-slung custom car setups that added flair to the scene. I had only hoped to catch more of Cam Society in the mix- it is always exciting to soak in a thorough update with their representatives and custom car setups, which primarily reside in the Volkswagen niche! Still, for what it was, the day hit every note a car enthusiast could ask for — tight community, open roads, authentic passion, and the kind of summer energy you wish you could bottle.
The Orangeville 2017 Experience
Concluding the day, there were some abandoned locations where Behn and I had a private photo session with his modified 2000 Volkswagen Jetta MK4 VR6- you can also find this included in the car show coverage.
Articulating an automotive portfolio dedicated to aftermarket parts, modification details and rollers- on the way home from Orangeville to Newmarket, we had the opportunity to capture some substantial rolling images with the Sony A300 camera.
Reviewing these on post-production in Lightroom— demonstrating the results and process in question: does an unsharp mask work in automotive photography? You can determine the answer as executed through the private photo session with Behn throughout the auto-event coverage images.
